Dr. Paul Carrese, Director of the Center for American Civics and Professor at Arizona State University’s (ASU) School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL), joins the show by phone to talk about his newly-released book Teaching America: Reflective Patriotism in Schools, College, and Culture. As the country celebrates its 250th birthday, Dr. Carrese discusses the alarming signs of civic disintegration, including the decline of patriotism among younger generations and the rise of anti-American views in education. He argues that the emphasis on formal schooling has led to a neglect of civic education, resulting in a lack of active, self-governing citizens. The professor highlights the need for a renewed focus on teaching America's history, institutions, and values, and introduces the concept of "reflective patriotism" as a way to promote civic engagement and critical thinking.
